Laptop Faults

My Laptop has no display on the screen at all?

This problem can be a result of a faulty LCD screen, faulty inverter or a bad video cable.

Why does my laptop run hot & the fan run all the time?

This is a common problem with laptops, over time they can fill up with dust that will block the vents and prevent the fan from blowing out hot air and recycling cold air.

Most pc guys will recommend you use compressed air in a can to clear the dust from the heat sinks and fans ... this in my opinion is a quick fix as most of the dust will just be blown inside the laptop and over time will reform.

The best solution is to strip down the laptop and clear the dust from the heatsink and fan + vents, putting laptops on duvets and on carpets can cause more dust to build up, it is best to buy a cooling pad as these have fans and just plug into your usb ports!

If left untreated this can cause all kind of problems and lead to increased temperatures and possible hardware failure, dust really is not good for computers and every computer would benefit from a total clean out over time.

I have cracked my laptop screen, should I buy a new laptop?

Computer Repair & Care would not recommend buying a new laptop over the price of a new screen, some bigger retail companies might very well suggest you buying a new laptop as this in turn will give them more profit!

A typical price for a screen is at least £100 but it depends on the size of the screen, bigger screens cost more and now that there are HD LED screens on the market these can cost more, it is certainly cheaper then buying a new laptop as this will cost you £300+ for a average spec laptop.

Here at Computer Repair & Care we can offer a fast turn around on screen repairs, if ordered from Monday to Thursday then your laptop will be returned to you normally the next working day!

We pride ourselves on our fast turn around and believe we are the most competitive on price and one of the quickest if not the quickest for screen repairs in Devon.

My Laptop is making some strange noises, clunking, whining etc?

If your Laptop is making strange noises then it could be a fan that is failing, if this is the case then it is better to get it looked at sooner rather then later.

Other strange noises can be your hard drive, over time they can become quite clunky. Computer Repair & Care always advise customers to backup data i.e. pictures, and important files as hard drives can fail. If your hard drive fails then we offer a data recovery service to retrieve your data from your hard drive if possible.

Optical drives such as dvd drives can become noisy over time and make strange noises, luckily these are fairly cheap to replace

My Laptop will not power on when I press the power button?

The problem could be that the DC Power jack has become loose on the motherboard, it may feel loose inside the laptop which could mean that the center pin has broken or the solder has come away from the connectors. This can be repaired but other repair companies might suggest you need a new motherboard / laptop which you do not have to do.

Other possibile faults could be the charger has failed and not putting out the correct voltage to power on the laptop, a faulty power button board or it could be that the motherboard has shorted out.

If you are in this situation then contact us to book in for a diagnostic check on your laptop, DC power jacks often become damaged and can be the cause of this problem.

My computer is very slow, pages freeze or hang or I get blue screens?

Many things can cause this, spyware, malware or virus infections can cause your computer to become slow and non repsonsive over time and every computer would benefit from a good clean out.

Other things such as; low space on hard drives, not enough memory installed on your computer, too many programs running at start up can cause your computer to become slow.

Hard drives over time can become damaged and have bad sectors, bad memory can cause running problems and blue screens

We can diagnose these problems with our testing equipment and tell you if you have a healthy hard drive and memory has no errors, we can also advise you if you have enough memory or would benefit from a memory upgrade to increase the performance of your computer.

My computer does not turn on from the power button?

If your computer does not power on from the power on button on the front of the computer, check the fuse in your plug is the first thing to do.

The causes for this fault could be that the PSU or also know as the Power Supply Unit has failed inside the computer, if this is the case then this can be diagnosed and replaced at an affordable price.

The other possible fault could be that the motherboard has shorted out preventing it from powering on, if this has happened then the motherboard can be replaced or it might be a good time to upgrade the internal parts of the computer.
